Presenting our honored guest halau from Maui, Hawaii
Back to HOME page
Visiting Colorado for the first time is our sister halau from Maui, Halau Kulia Ika Nu'u (to strive for the highest). They are a group of dedicated dancers, musicians, singers and artisans, led by Kumu Lehua Kekahuna. Halau Kulia recently opened for Aerosmith, while the rock band was on tour in Hawaii last year. The halau performs all over the islands and now they will be both performing and teaching here in Colorado during the festival. They will be opening for the Ho'ike concert on Friday night, you don't want to miss the show! They will also host some very special, cultural workshops at the festival site, see the workshop tab on this page for details and how to register.
Come out to the festival, meet our visiting halau from Maui and share some Aloha from Colorado!!
Kumu Lehua Kekahuna
Aloha! I was born and raised on the island of Maui. I am the daughter of Nailen Joseph Huakini Kekahuna (Keanae, Maui) and Dorothy Marlene Kamalu Kahookele (Nahiku, Maui). At the age of (3) I was diagnosed with a rare skin disease that caused me to loose my right leg. Through my trials and tribulations of dealing with this lost I was determined not to let this disability stop me from being normal. Inspired by my mother who was an entertainer and performed all over Maui I started singing at places that she performed and then at the age of (10) it was at that time my mother saw I wanted to dance hula. But how could her daughter dance she wondered but never the less she stood by me and let me find my inner strength.
In 1980 my mother (Kumu Kamalu) started the Halau O Ma Kau Kau and performed all over the islands and traveled to Fiji . I had an opportunity to learn dances of Polynesia from the best on the island including the Siva Afi ( Samoan Fire Knife ). I was also chosen to be recognized on Hawaiis Superkids , Hawaiian Moving Company, and Ripleys Believe It Or Not as the only one-legged Hula and Fire Knife dancer. Its been an amazing journey being able to have learned and shared all the teachings that I have had not only my Hawaiian Culture but also the dances of the South Pacific.
In 1996 I started my Halau Kulia Ika Nuu (to strive for the highest) hoping that my haumana (students) and keikis (sons) will carry on and keep our culture alive knowing that nothing is impossible.
