Hawaii based organizations spreading cultural awareness at the Colorado Asian Aloha Festival

Colorado is Going Aloha!

The Asian Aloha Festival is a cultural celebration of Hawaiian and Asian culture in Boulder. Events include a concert featuring some of Hawaii’s top performers. A FREE 2-day festival of Hawaiian art, food, vendor booths, Hawaiian music and hula performances all on Boulder's historic Pearl Street Mall.

The Asian Aloha Festival is run by Halau Hula o na Mauna Pohaku , an all-volunteer, nonprofit hula halau (school) dedicated to preserving the Hawaiian culture in Colorado and the Boulder Asian Pacific Alliance, which promotes Asian culture in Boulder. Many people generously donate time and talent to make this community event possible.

Page 11 *** OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE ***Colorado Aloha Festivalcontact: Traci Brown 303-494-707, traci_tracibrown.comSeptember 17-19, 2010, BoulderBoulder is going Hawaiian for a weekend of dance, music, talk story, crafts and food during the Colorado Aloha Festival (coloradoalohafest.com). The fun begins on Friday, Sept. 17, when local hula school Mauna Pohaku presents a concert at CUs Macky Auditorium. In addition to more than 40 adult and keiki (children) dancers, the concert will feature 5-time Grammy Award winner Daniel Ho and composer, author, and kumu hula (hula master) Loea Hewett. Loea will emcee, providing background about the dances and chants both ancient and modern as well as delight the audience with ukulele (Ho) and song (Hewett). The concert starts at 7pm, and tickets are available for purchase in advance on the website.On Saturday, September 18, the CU Buffaloes football team will play the University of Hawaii (UH) Warriors at Folsom Field. Mauna Pohaku dancers will be joined by dancers from Kahalui, Maui, and local hula schools at the halftime performance during the game, which is tentatively scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN (check local listings for time). Expect lots of UH fans in town at the game and at the Twenty Ninth Street Mall, where the festival will have free cultural workshops, music, and Pacific Islander performances all day and continuing on Sunday. Vendors, many coming from Hawaii, will be selling everything you need to keep you in the aloha spirit year-round, including fine art, jewelry, leis, clothing, and music. In addition, ono (delicious) island food will be available for purchase. If youve never sampled Spam sushi a Hawaiian favorite this will be your opportunity. Wash it down with a tropical smoothie from Maui Wowie and you're good to go. So what if you can't surf in Colorado?Held biannually, the 3rd Colorado Aloha Festival is an all-volunteer event created to share the culture and heritage of Hawaii with Colorado and the mountain west. Volunteers are needed in many capacities, so if youd like to help out, visit the website for more information. The festival is accepting vendors and performers for the Community Stage through Aug 15.
